Anxiety
Anxiety is one of the most treatable mental health challenges for adults and children. Often times, anxiety can be relieved quickly through the use of cognitive behavioral therapy, or CBT. CBT works to help clients connect their thoughts, feelings, and behavior to accomplish their therapeutic goals.
Anxiety comes in many forms and has a variety of symptoms, ranging from specific phobias to generalized anxiety and even temporary test anxiety or fears of public speaking. In children, anxiety is often observed through physical symptoms i.e. stomachaches or headaches with no medical cause, irritability, or tearfulness. Using CBT as a treatment for anxiety, clients learn skills to cope with anxiety and typically return to their normal daily functioning feeling less anxious, more productive, and happy.
What is Play Therapy?
Play Therapy is the recommended treatment for children, approximately age 3-13, experiencing a variety of mental health concerns, life transitions, or behavior challenges. For children, play is their language, and carefully selected playroom toys, become their words. Children use play to communicate thoughts and feelings they may not otherwise be able to articulate.
With the assistance of a trained and certified Play Therapist, children can work to resolve conflicts, communicate thoughts and feelings, promote healing from difficult experiences, and attain age appropriate growth and development. Play Therapy can also assist in the accurate diagnosis of various mental health concerns such as anxiety, depression, traumatic stress, attention deficit/hyperactivity, adjustment disorders, as well as other behaviors.
Trauma Recovery Counseling
Trauma Recovery Counseling is a highly specialized form of counseling treatment and has the potential to help individuals heal from the most difficult experiences. Most of us, if we live long enough, will experience a traumatic incident in our life time and may benefit from trauma recovery counseling. Some common types of trauma include; veterans experiencing Post Traumatic Stress, sexual abuse, physical abuse, emotional abuse, neglect, traumatic grief/loss, and environmental trauma i.e. hurricanes, house fire, etc.
The goal of trauma recovery counseling is to provide a safe place for clients to talk about the trauma, identify their thoughts and feelings, gain education about trauma and how the body responds, develop skills to cope with any symptoms of traumatic stress they may experience, and ultimately experience the hope that comes from healing and moving forward in their lives.
